Predictable, I think not. Nothing in the band’s history suggested a James Murphy production. It was most unpredictable. Now I do understand Murphy is not everybody’s cup of tea and his involvement did lead to a danceable, groove based result. But listen to the different layers below the electronic groove, the Caribbean rhythms, the fusion of the two is fascinating. Reflektor is indeed the weakest cut on the disk but terrible lyrics “..If this is heaven I don’t know what it’s for…If this is heaven I need something more”.

They also continue to be on the cutting edge with video work - particularly the interactive ones.

Interesting that Bowie showed up on Reflektor.

I liked this "marketing" concept - the mainstream approach that differs from a lot of their other stuff. Then again, the marketing and commodification is often more of an art than the product itself these days...

I saw them on their first two big tours -- after Funeral and Neon Bible. Those were truly awesome shows, but not the kind I'm used to seeing. As much as I like Funeral, I think they're basically a bunch of overachievers with good stage presence. Who are the great musicians in this band? More of a sum is greater than the parts thing, I suppose.

Definitely a sum is bigger proposition. Then again, I'm happy to see the folks back in Durham, NC with Merge Records make out like bandits (kudos to superchunk).

I have a new theory that the Canadian band collectives that came about in the early 2000s all had one truly great album in them and that's about it. This is based on my knowledge of two or perhaps as many as three bands, so it's pretty much air tight. Another case in point is Broken Social Scene.

New Pornographers as part of your sample set?

Saw Neko Case after her last album (First City Festival in Monterey) and while I really like her, was completely underwhelmed by her live. Too bad.

Perhaps not predictable for them, specifically, but as a general rule for indie bands these days.

I should also say "electronic grooves" have never really been my thing, so there's that. Works well with their sound though, I guess: mostly repetitive ostinatos with relatively little melodic development. Seems like they've previously gotten by mostly on grandiose statements: anthems with lots of energy build, but not much else.

"anthems with lots of energy build, but not much else."
Which is my wife's big complaint with them, but live, they knocked me out (granted, it was a crowd of 300 so that may have explained same):

iphone vids really don't capture it:

Cool. Same song from when I saw them at the 9:30 Club in 2005, but pro-shot. I didn't realize that they were filming.

The 9:30 Club - I think NPR did that show on their live concert series. Been a long time since I was there (back in the days when Root Boy Slim still walked the earth).

Yep, AF were really having a coming out party back then.
Your 9:30 is different from my 9:30 Club. Venue moved in Jan 1996, right after I moved to DC.

Mine was right next to a strip club (as is the Warfield now) - was easy to walk in wrong door.
